Cholesterol is a type of blood fat that your body needs to work properly. However, having too much cholesterol in your blood can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. High cholesterol usually has no symptoms, so the only way to know your cholesterol level is to have a blood test.
Anyone can have high cholesterol, including people who are young, slim and otherwise healthy. Your cholesterol can be affected by your diet and lifestyle, but genetics and other health conditions can also play a role.
Know your numbers
A cholesterol test can measure different types of cholesterol, including total cholesterol, HDL and non-HDL cholesterol. Your GP or healthcare professional will consider your cholesterol results alongside factors such as your age, blood pressure and other health conditions when assessing your cardiovascular risk.
If you have been advised to have a cholesterol check or review, please make sure you attend your appointment.
Small changes can make a difference
This National Cholesterol Month, HEART UK is encouraging people to make simple, achievable swaps to support healthier cholesterol levels and heart health.
You can help look after your cholesterol by:
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet and reducing foods high in saturated fat
- Choosing healthier unsaturated fats where possible
- Eating plenty of fruit, vegetables and high-fibre foods
- Being physically active and reducing long periods of sitting
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Stopping smoking
- Taking prescribed medicines as advised by your healthcare professional
You don't have to make lots of changes at once. Small, sustainable changes can add up over time.
