Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that mainly affects children but can occur at any age. It spreads through coughs, sneezes, and close contact with an infected person.
Symptoms
Early signs include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. After a few days, a distinctive red rash appears, usually starting on the face and spreading down the body.
Why Is It Important?
Measles can sometimes lead to serious complications, especially in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Complications can include ear infections, pneumonia, and inflammation of the brain (encephalitis).
Prevention
The best protection against measles is vaccination. The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) is safe and effective, typically given in two doses during childhood. It not only protects the individual but also helps prevent outbreaks in the community.
